It’s taken a while but we’re finally there.
One of the most important things to us is building a great reputation.
It’s fair to say that the building trade as a whole has taken a battering over the last few years with TV programmes like “Cowboy Builders” taking pot shots at the trade.
That’s why it was important to us to gain Checkatrade accreditation.
If you’ve never heard of the organisation then you may be surprised to learn that there is a review site that checks traders before they do any work.
The checkatrade system is fairlysimple; they conduct checks on the tradesmen to make sure they know what they are doing, are properly set up, don’t have a string of bad debts and have a track record of happy customers.
We applied a few weeks ago and were pleasantly surprised at the lengths to which Checkatrade go to make sure that the company is on the level.
We had to provide copies of our insurances, our company documentation and even had to prove our identities using passports, driving licences and proof of address, and not just the business, the directors too.
Once all of these hurdles had been passed we had to provide references from customers for Checkatrade to erm…check.
We didn’t know which ones they would phone so handed over a bunch of names. It was only later we found out that they contacted all of them.
Unfortunately what we hadn’t factored in was that some of our customers might have gone away on holiday which naturally held things up a bit. Lesson learned.
Finally we got our registration and were live on the system.
It means that we can be found on their online directory and that we can use their logos on our website, stationery and van. It also means that we have to hand over a feedback card to all of our customers so that they can let Checkatrade be assured that we are keeping up standards.
It’s great to know that our customers like what we do and it’s a shot in the arm for a small family business.
Now all we need to do is make sure we get lots of great feedback!
